Maria Kate Fleming
grew up on the Mississippi
Gulf Coast,
where she sought out and took every opportunity to perform. She studied piano, danced (even in the rain),
played the trumpet in marching band for 7 years, sang solos in church choir,
recited poems, and cultivated her natural stage presence performing with
community theater groups. Amidst it all, she decided to study classical
voice.
While earning her BM at Loyola University New Orleans, she
entertained sold-out audiences as the title role in Lakmé and Queen of the Night in The
Magic Flute. Having been the recipient of both academic and music
scholarship, the Theodore Presser award, and several other honors, Ms. Fleming
graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2005. That
was also the year of her professional debut with New Orleans Opera as Sylviane
in The Merry Widow.
After moving to Baltimore, Maryland, to attend Peabody Conservatory for her Master’s
degree, Ms. Fleming recreated her role as Queen of the Night with Peabody’s outreach opera. Other roles include Olympia
in Les Contes d’Hoffmann with Peabody
Opera , Sophie in a concertized
version of Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier,
Gretel in Hansel and Gretel at Opera
in the Ozarks, and Adele (Die Fledermaus)
in the 2007 AIMS Opernabend Konzert in
Frohnleiten, Austria.
In the past two seasons, Ms. Fleming has delivered memorable
performances across the United
States. In April 2008, she sang and danced in combat
boots as Cupid in Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld with Opera Vivente
in Baltimore. Then, following summer travel in Europe and Morocco, Ms. Fleming performed in a benefit
concert with colleagues in Napa Valley,
California, where she returned in
December for a special holiday charity concert. Other recent performances
include Sally in Die Fledermaus with
Opera Manhattan in New York, Fortuna/Damigella
in Opera Vivente’s The Coronation of
Poppea, and Blonde in scenes from Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail in New Haven, Connecticut.
Ms. Fleming studies with Claudia Friedlander in New York City and is
represented by RP Talent Management.
